Many countries in Europe require parties to collect a certain number of signatures from citizens to register as a party or run for elections. In most of these countries, this involves collecting signatures on paper, bringing them to city halls or notaries for verification, and then handing them in with the body running the election.
In 2021, Finland has digitized this process via puoluerekisteri.fi.
Citizens can declare their support for a party using a digital ID. The website transparently shows the current count of supporters and all additional data relevant to party registration to any user of the platform.
This makes it easy for new parties to register, for citizens to declare their support, and for the authorities compared to paper-based signatures collection and verification.
